"...splendid...exquisite vocals." -Sing Out! "As my father would say, Amy has a voice that would get a bishop out on a blind date to which I have to add he'd probably kick his mitre through a stained glass window. ...Her voice is a warm, honeyed sound...." - Ewart Shaw 105.1FM, South Australia "....a showcase for White's ethereal vocals." ?- The Washington Post ___________________________________ After decades of instrumental composition, and with the release of her eleventh studio album, Home Sweet Home, Amy White ventures beyond the boundaries of original and traditional instrumental fare into the brave new world of songwriting. First, she addresses the universal themes of love, loss, and belonging. (Home is where the heart is, of course - whether that is a structure, a cause, a person, or even a dog....) White then delves into some of the major, progressive issues of the day with a passion she once reserved for the voting booth and private conversation. (Environmentalism, farms, energy, and jobs on #2, Salt of the Earth - foreclosure on #6, American Dream - gay marriage and civil rights on #8, Love Across the Boundaries - and more.) White received the Indie Award for Gratitude, a recording of her original instrumental guitar duets with husband, Al Petteway. She also won more than a dozen Washington Area Music Awards, and three separate Maryland State Arts Council grants for her compositions and solo instrumental performance. Her duets with Al Petteway grace several Ken Burns documentaries, most notably, "The National Parks" (2009), "The Dust Bowl" (2012), and "The Roosevelts" (2014). White's instrumental skills provide the muscular and emotional underpinning for the original songs on Home Sweet Home. She plays mountain dulcimer on the title track - an ode to the pastoral communities along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She performs solo on piano for her most intimate lament on the closing track (#11 - When You Were Here With Me.) She performs most accompaniment for the album on acoustic guitar, in DADGAD and open C tunings. Whether solo (#3, The Best Dog - #5, How Can You Love Me - and #11) - or in rich ensemble with River Guerguerian on percussion, Scott Ainslie and Annie Lalley on harmony vocals, Duncan Wickel on fiddle, and Al Petteway on guitar, and more - each of White's songs is an offering and a plea for a much kinder world. ___________________________________ 'Mesmerizing tone poems...just pure music...White continues to paint sumptuous portraits of life situations with a remarkable measure of clarity and color.' - JAZZTIMES '...music of transporting power and beauty.' '-shaped not only by a keen sense of lyricism and dynamics, but also a quiet soulfulness that continually draws in the listener.' - THE WASHINGTON POST 'White guides the listener from the profound to the whimsical and back again with all the ease of a brilliant conversationalist.' - WOMEN TODAY '.... a sonorous and often sensual spell which is impossible to shake off. Technically confident and melodically assured, a musical odyssey worth investigating.' - FOLK ROOTS MAGAZINE '....caffeinated, jazz-spiked acoustic brew.' - THE WASHINGTON CITY PAPER.
