The hellbender (cryptobranchus alleganiensis) is an endangered species of giant salamander endemic to the Eastern United States. It is most concentrated in the Ohio River Valley and throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. These salamanders are much larger than any others in their native region. The Missouri Department of Conservation claims that the name 'hellbender' comes from the animal's odd appearance. A common lore claims it was named by settlers who likened it's appearance to "a creature that came out of Hell and is bent on going back". Another rendition of this lore says the undulating skin of a hellbender reminded observers of "horrible tortures of the infernal regions". Vernacular names include "snot otter", "devil dog", "mud-devil", "grampus", "Kentucky Crocodile" and "mud dog". All of this, of course, is great material for a band name and we understandably have adopted it as our own. The sounds you hear on this record reflect a cross section of the many tunes that we perform in our live shows. We didn't have a clear direction or concept when we first came into the studio and laid down 14 songs in a whopping four hours. As we listened to our tracks, we realized how vast the spectrum of country music is. The songs that we chose to include on our record come from many places including Bakersfield, Texas, Appalachia, and the Deep South. They include country & western sub-genres such as Texas swing, ballads, country rock, truck driving songs and even bluegrass tunes that have been modified for our electric ensemble. We even have a Cajun number. Just like the elusive hellbender salamander, some of these songs are endangered. To our knowledge, some of them haven't been recorded for quite sometime. However, they are all heartfelt and we hope our renditions pay homage to the kindred spirits that wrote them. We hope you enjoy our first album!
