Calypsos Panama: Caribbean Rhythm and Cheerfulness Origin and Presence of Calypso in Panama It is an Afro-Caribbean rhythm originally from Trinidad and Tobago that is Anglo-phone as well as Franco-phone. It's peculiarity is that it uses as main instrument some metallic drums made from recycled petroleum barrels called "steeldrums", "metallic drums of Trinidad" or "bum-bac" as they are known in Venezuela. Calypso interpreters and composers are identified as "Calypsonians" and are noticeable for their creativity that allows them to improvise a Calypso from any subject. Calypso is not only a musical expression, but also a mental attitude, a philosophy with deep roots that allows us understand the complicated customs that have resulted from the mixture of races originated in the Caribbean whose flavour, passion and feelings can be perceived through the dancing of their women to the rhythm of steeldrums and the ingenious voice of calypsonians. The construction of the Panama Canal at the beginning of the 20th century incorporated to the Panamanian culture the richness of this rhythm that has given world-wide fame to Calypsonians like: "Lord Cobra", "Lord Kontiki" and "Black Majesty". As a tribute to "Lord Kontiki", in this production we have compiled themes, in their original version, that stand out for being listened in Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
