Mark Flugge is active in the Central Ohio area as a pianist, composer, educator, and bandleader. His first CD as a leader, the self-produced 'February's Promise', features all original compositions and is receiving much critical acclaim. Keith Turner (WCPN jazz radio Cleveland) calls it 'a great balance of thought, variety, and groove'. Craig W. Hurst (Jazzreview.com) says, 'a superb collection of original compositions performed at a high level of musical artistry'. He's recorded three CD's with Columbus singer Dick Mackey, and is also the featured soloist on the recent Famous Jazz Orchestra CD 'Sight Readin' Baby'. As the artistic director of the Firehouse Jazz Society he works regularly with such greats as Joe LaBarbera, David 'Fathead' Newman, Jimmy Heath, Marcus Belgrave, Ken Peplowski, Gene Bertoncini, Byron Stripling and Ira Sullivan, among many others. A specially prepared show from the aforementioned series featured rare transcribed works of Duke Ellington, which Flugge prepared, performed, and conducted. He has been a guest soloist with both the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. The Ohio Arts Council has awarded Flugge on three separate occasions for pieces he composed for his group 'No Pedestrians'. Currently the head of the jazz/contemporary piano curriculum at Capital University, Mr. Flugge formerly taught at the Eastman School of Music. He has conducted clinics throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Germany on jazz improvisation and the music of Duke Ellington. Mark Flugge earned his Master's Degree at the Eastman School of Music in 1994.
