In addition to Thelonius Monk and Charlie Parker, the US jazz trumpeter, singer and composer Dizzy Gillespie is one of the most famous bepop musicians of all time. In the 1940s and 1950s, the musician - who even ran for US-presidentials in 1964 - was considered to be the epitome of a hip jazz intellectual. His trademark was the trumpet with a 45-degree upturned bell and it's characteristically bulging cheeks. For this phenomenon, medicine has even created a technical term after him: "Gillespie pouch".
