Cahersiveen, pronounced Ca-Hair-Si-Veen in English, and Cathair Saidhbbin in Irish/Gaelic takes it's name from the town of Cahersiveen, located on Ireland's Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. Cahersiveen lies beside the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by rivers, lakes, mountains and ancient archaeological sites. The region has historically been a sanctuary for traditional Irish music, and enjoys a rich tradition of composition for fiddle, pipe and drum. During the time of the mid-19th Century famine, County Kerry had the highest annual rate of emigration from Ireland. Thousands of it's people travelled to America, including many who settled in Northern California during the Gold Rush. Inspired and founded in 2003 by Marta Quinn, Cahersiveen features a repertoire ranging from simple Celtic tunes and American folk classics to hard-driving, edgy, Scottish and Irish jigs and reels. Cahersiveen ranks among the top Celtic bands in Northern California. Upon invitation, Cahersiveen performed at the annual 2006 Festival for Music and the Arts in County Kerry, Ireland, and recorded it's first CD thereafter. The band' second CD was released in March 2014. The music is performed by classically trained musicians from professional orchestras located in Northern California. Of cinematic quality, the music sparks images of sailors pulling into harbors after having survived the sea, celebrating with tankards of ale, music and dance. The band is grateful for the music brought to our country and our region by the Irish and by those from other great Celtic nations.
