Hancock, Amy: Love Affair
Title: Love Affair
Label: CD Baby
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
Amy Hancock will be playing at the 2009 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival with Bob French and the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band on the weekend of May 2nd and 3rd. Hope to see you there, and thank you for all the support! Amy Hancock is a naturally gifted live performer with presence and awareness coupled with great vocal and emotional range and delicacy. Amy is also a dedicated artisan of her voice, who continuously crafts and cultivates her sound and versatility. Amy Hancock's album, Love Affair, is a release of incredible variety in musical selections. The American Songbook is well represented here, with 12 meticulously arranged and performed renditions of some of the most beloved and infectious tunes ever, and the truth in these interpretations are sure to land humbly with the finest available today. The richness of this album shows in the treatment of each piece. Some are richly and traditionally presented, such as the playful Fly Me To The Moon, which starts the album off right on time. East Of The Sun, a showcase song for Amy's deep tones and precise timing, is also rich and revered here. Others, such as Deed I Do, which is reworked here into an infectious swish and swing rhythm, represent an inventive take on a classic song. Amy is a master of subtlety. She purrs as a kitten on the lavish Teach Me Tonight. Slipping even deeper into silky interpretation, Amy sings a very personal Peel Me A Grape that will fog the glass. Add to this a nearly heart broken Nearness Of You, and the unsuspecting listener may get caught in a happy trance. Plenty of lively tunes ensure the pace is varied and full, especially evident on the brightly vocalized This Can't Be Love, a joyful rendition of a delightful tune. One of the abiding features Amy possesses as a live musician is reflected well here in this recording, and that is her ability to let the musicians express and invent. Her pianist, accompanist, and dear friend for years now, Mr. Joe Cea, is the commanding pianist and keyboard player here, bringing his strong arrangement and inventive support skills throughout this project. These two have a history of excellent live shows together, and they drew upon that to make this release a reflection of that history and a love of jazz music. Percussions were largely handled by Mr. Chuck Leonard, a personal and dear friend of Amy's and a master artist behind the kit, who is excellent here, and continues to be even better live. Combining each of their incredible artistry with undying work ethic ensures this album has the advantages afforded in exceptionally clean recording techniques, and the culmination is nothing short of a brilliant recording. It is Amy Hancock's love affair with jazz music that makes her voice and music incredible, and makes this Love Affair album a start-to-finish joy.
