Review

Rolling Stone (9/16/99, p.114) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...a singer-songwriter album done from a neoboogie point of view....the production, by roots vet Terry Manning, just sings, and as a singer-songwriter, Popper eats cliches for breakfast."
Entertainment Weekly (9/17/99, p.80) - "...freewheeling solo debut chockablock with expansive folk-pop keepers....refreshingly mind-bent sunniness." - Rating: B
Mojo (Publisher) (11/99, p.120) - "...[a] mix-and-match attitude seems to represent the album's governing philosophy....Popper's engaging uncliched lyrics and varied vocals...help make ZYGOTE a deeply compelling debut."

Title Note

Personnel: John Popper (vocals, guitar, flute, whistle, harmonica); Crugie Ricco (guitar, background vocals); Rob Clores (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Dave Ares (bass); Carter Beauford (drums, percussion).

Recorded at Water Music, Hoboken, New Jersey.

It is a common and oftentimes disappointing practice for the leaders of successful pop groups to indulge themselves in solo albums. This is not the case for the man behind the harmonica of Blues Traveler, John Popper. In fact, for Popper, who has been performing his solo material since the release of Blues Traveler's first album, ZYGOTE is a logical progression. John Popper was honing songs like "Run-Around" and "Just Wait" as a solo performer long before they became staples in the Blues Traveler repertoire. For ZYGOTE, Popper recruited a longtime friend, guitarist Crugie Rocco, as well as Dave Matthews Band drummer, Carter Beauford.

On ZYGOTE, listeners get to hear a side of John Popper not found in his work with Blues Traveler. "Once You're Awake" is a tender, romantic ballad that has a sparse yet moving arrangement. The groove on "Evil in my Chair" tips its hat equally to '50s surf music and to Santana. Though harmonica is used conservatively on ZYGOTE, the songs contain a great sense of dynamics and the vocals shine throughout. As the album title implies, ZYGOTE is a testament to John Popper's ongoing development as an artist and songwriter.
