Jan Dismas Zelenka was a bass player who was employed at the Dresden court. During his lifetime Zelenka was mostly known for his religious music. This is surprising since he is now remembered as an instrumental composer of daring originality. He wrote nine orchestral concertos as well as six trio sonatas for two oboes, bassoon and continuo.

The trio sonatas are daring works that feature startling harmonies wed to a carefully constructed form in each sonata. The innovative wind writing is challenging for performers and results in virtuoso fireworks. Zelenka's fast movements are filled with dance rhythms while the slow movements are wonderfully eloquent. This recording features some of the finest chamber music players in music led by legendary oboist Heinz Holliger and will introduce listeners to a worthy voice from the Baroque.
