With mountains of past-due bills piling up, Zack (Seth Rogen, KNOCKED UP) and his roommate/childhood friend Miri (Elizabeth Banks, SCRUBS) aren't sure how they're going to stay in their Pittsburgh apartment. But a chance encounter at their 10-year reunion gives them the idea to make a porn movie. When it comes time for the friends to do the deed, they realize that perhaps they're more than just friends. Childhood friends and roommates Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) are flat broke and working dead end jobs. When their water and electricity are turned off in the middle of an icy winter, they decide that to make a porno so that they can quickly pay off their mountain of unpaid bills. What ensues is an against all odds effort to make the video that will enrich their lives- though not in the way that they think. Sadly, the enrichment is long in coming (sorry!) and for the first hour, the most uplifting element of the film is that your life cannot possibly be as bad as Zack and Miri’s. Kevin Smith, writer/director of cult classics Clerks and Mallrats, dealt gracefully with an unusual love story in his 1998 film Chasing Amy. Yet Zack and Miri lacks the heart, the perceptive scrutiny of human relationships and the witty dialogue of Chasing Amy. What IS in plentiful supply however is slapstick and scatological humor, and there is swearing and a reference to male genitalia in almost every other line. The incessant vulgarity is a little wearing; I am all for making characters sound real, but I think that even the proverbial sailors might blush at some of the lines in Zack and Miri.
