Pernice Brothers Artist Snapshot:

The Boston-based Scud Mountain Boys were much beloved in 1990s indie circles, as much for leader Joe Pernice's literate and thoughtful take on the alt-country form as for their excellent playing. But when the band dissolved, few were prepared for what followed. In 1998, Sub Pop released Pernice's new band's album, OVERCOME BY HAPPINESS, which abandoned the dour and earth-toned countryisms for an expansive, sun-drenched classic pop sound that employed strings, horns, and keyboards. The Pernice Brothers quickly joined the ranks of the great orchestrated pop bands of the day, and their tuneful, intelligent albums have consistently pleased fans and critics alike.

Review

Entertainment Weekly (07/11/03, p.78) - "...Dials up the energy...without losing the tuneful wit that distinguished earlier, more polished efforts....YOURS, MINE & OURS has an easygoing vibe that gives Pernice's literate folk-pop ample room to roam..." - Rating: B+
Uncut (01/04, pp.84-7) - Ranked #48 in Uncut's "Albums Of The Year 2003"
Uncut (9/03, p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Songwriting of the highest caliber; resonant in appeal, packed with lucid imagery and stuffed with harmony and melody..."
Magnet (6-7/03, p.103) - "...Pernice crafts perfect dew-drop melodies around which he wraps stories that'll rip your heart in two....the very essence of what power pop could and should look like....a monumental record from a towering talent."
Mojo (Publisher) (8/03, p.100) - 4 out of 5 stars - "...[Certain songs scrape] away the lush instrumentation for spare bass-lines and chiming guitars....The balance between Joe's resigned words and uplifting melodies remains sublime."

YOURS, MINE, AND OURS was recorded by the Pernice Brothers in the shadow of 9/11, huddled up in a canopied cabin in 2002 Vermont. However, the result was far from a dark, brooding record. YOURS, MINE, AND OURS, if still introspective, is the band's most lush and upbeat offering. Even on the most melancholy of tracks, such as "Baby in Two," the feel is more elegiac, even dreamlike and inspiring, than depressing. That track gives way to the symphonic lullaby of "Blinded By the Stars," followed by the driving "Waiting for the Universe," and so on. Joe Pernice stated he sought to rediscover "the joy in things and hanging onto them for dear life," and to that end it succeeds and grandly. With YOURS, MINE, AND OURS, Pernice plays tour guide, revealing hope within the darkest abyss; he doesn't claim to have all the answers, or even any, really, but he has created a warm, embracing post-power pop record for disturbing times.
