Title Note

Personnel: Mose Allison (vocals, piano); David Sanborn (alto saxophone); Al Cohn, Joe Farrell (tenor saxophone); Al Porcino (trumpet); Jack Hannah (bass); Jerry Granelli (drums).

Producer: Ilhan Mimaroglu.

Recorded at The Record Plant, New York, New York on April 5, 7, 8 & 9, 1976.

Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus, New York, New York).

On the surface, this 1976 date for Atlantic might seem like an attempt to cash in on Allison's de facto anthem (the title track) by offering a rerecorded version of it along with new takes on some other old Allison tunes. The fact is that the superb musicianship provided by Al Cohn, David Sanborn, Joe Farrell, and others, does indeed take the tracks to new places. "Your Mind is on Vacation" is given a more propulsive rhythm than the original version. On this and other tunes, the addition of a punchy horn section to Allison's customary piano-trio setting adds a welcome new flavor.

Two of the best songs from the Allison classic I'VE BEEN DOING SOME THINKIN' (which entered the CD age as part of the two-CD package SAGE OF TIPPO), the uproarious biology lesson "Your Molecular Structure" and the sarcastically self-doubting "I Feel So Good," are given new life here. Perhaps most impressive, though, is the Allison obscurity "Fires of Spring," an uncharacteristically earnest piece of song-poetry that's almost Blake-ian in its deft use of language and its cosmic scope. It's an unexpected boon that makes an already attractive package all the more satisfying.
