Review

Entertainment Weekly (3/5/04, p.68) - "This is one of [Parker's] great ones, a Brit's take on Americana that reveals [his] always formidable songwriting chops are as well honed as ever." - Rating: A-
Uncut (5/04, p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A]n album of mellow country romps and contented roots-tinged rock that in feel is reminiscent of Van Morrison's TUPELO HONEY period."
Down Beat (p.80) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Parker's humor is as sardonic as ever."
Mojo (Publisher) (4/04, p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Parker's latest finds him casting doubtful glances in the rearview of his career, while chugging on with satisfying determination."

Title Note

Personnel: Graham Parker (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica); Lucinda Williams (vocals); Ben Peeler, John Would (lap steel guitar); Tom Freund (melodica, keyboards, acoustic & electric basses, background vocals); Don Heffington (jews harp, drums, percussion).

Recorded at Stanley Recording Studios, Venice, California.

Despite the implications of the title, YOUR COUNTRY is not exactly a "country" album, though it does find British-born Graham Parker respectfully acknowledging the influence of American country music. There's a higher twang quotient, as well as a slightly loping, shuffling beat, but this is just more of the same wonderful stuff fans have come to appreciate from Parker. YOUR COUNTRY continues in the Parker tradition of reflective, soulful roots-rocking indignation, sung with that most human and welcoming of raspy voices.

Highlights include "Cruel Lips," a relaxed, honky-tonk-flavored duet with Lucinda Williams that would've been perfect for Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash to cover, and the yearning "Almost Thanksgiving Day," which shows Parker still finding inspiration from the Band. (The moniker of his 1970s ensemble the Rumour is the title of a Band song from STAGE FRIGHT.) There's also an unexpectedly faithful cover of Jerry Garcia's tale of life on the run, "Sugaree." However, the terse "Tornado Alley" and the wry "The Rest Is History" exemplify what Parker does best--framing tart, laconic observations of our world with engaging, earthy melodies.
