Review

Spin (4/04, p.94) - "[W]ith a dozen songs as dark and sweet as baking chocolate and as ambitious as the Mars rover." - Grade" B+
Uncut (p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]he overall impact is of a Scott Walker musical composed by a literate indie rocker in a Weimar Republic cellar studio....Oddly affecting."
Magnet (p.89) - "Affected strings, soft, rolling percussion and a jailbird ode to cocaine: YOUR BLUES is nothing short of showstopping."

Title Note

Destroyer: Daniel Bejar (vocals, acoustic guitar, synthesizer, percussion); David Carswell, John Collins (synthesizer).

Recorded in 2003.

Vancouver's Destroyer has been a fairly prolific project for sometime-New Pornographer Dan Bejar. YOUR BLUES (2004) is a dense trip through Bejar's grandiose pop. Whereas on previous albums Bejar was joined by other musicians, on YOUR BLUES he is flying mostly solo. It's all synthesizers and midi instrumentation, a one-man band in the truest sense of the word. The bittersweet orchestration on tracks such as "It's Gonna Take an Airplane" adds an extra layer of authenticity to the lovelorn and hyper-aware tales he spins. It's overdramatic for sure, but it ultimately works because Bejar never takes himself too seriously--so much so that in the press Bejar has dismissed Destroyer as possibly being a "half-baked exercise." Either way, YOUR BLUES is an ambitious work, the kind that reveals more with each subsequent listen, and Bejar's cryptic lyrics certainly afford repeated listens.
