Title Note

If the band you're in is tired of fending off accusations of being too much of a throwback, with nothing to contribute that's remotely modern, the last thing you'd want to do is appear on a compilation with several other bands who are in the same predicament. Even worse would be appearing with these bands on a compilation that takes its name from a semilegendary compilation released decades prior. So go figure. At any rate, most of the 16 bands on Yes New York -- featuring a title and graphic design that deliberately references 1978's No New York, the no wave scene's definitive (if flawed) documentation -- contribute previously released or leftover songs that prevent the disc from being an event. Interpol's "NYC," Radio 4's "Save Your City," Ted Leo & the Pharmacists' "The Ballad of the Sin Eater," Calla's "Strangler," the Walkmen's "Rue the Day," the Rapture's "Olio," and several others were already available on the groups' respective LPs -- so this is a lot closer to the type of compilation you'd get with an issue of CMJ than something special. Given time, it will become the type of disc that can be found in every used bin the United States. ~ Andy Kellman
