Romance and drama play out against the backdrop of political strife in Indonesia in the 1960s.
Mel Gibson plays an Australian journalist, Guy Hamilton, on his first important outing abroad. Arriving in Jakarta in '65, shortly before the coup that all but deposed president Sukarno, Guy is immediately thrust into a hot bed of political turmoil. With the help of Chinese-Australian photographer Billy Kwan, Guy is exposed to the highest strata of political society. After getting romantically involved with a British diplomat, he resists leaving the war torn country until it's too late, in spite of entreats.
