On her remarkably assured self-titled Atlantic debut, French-Israeli vocalist Yael Naim joins the ranks of inventive-yet-accessible performers such as Fiona Apple, Feist, and Keren Ann, offering up an album that's eclectic but never overreaching. Selected for a prominent Apple laptop ad, the buoyant piano-led single "New Soul" is the record's high point, and showcases Naim's warm, inviting voice. Other standout tracks include "Toxic," which recasts the Britney Spears hit as a strange lullaby, and the folk-tinged "Yashanti," one of a handful of songs sung in Hebrew or French. While many people will seek out YAEL NAIM for "New Soul," they'll find that whole album is worthy of adoration and acclaim.

Yael Naim – Yael Naim

Holding the title for the first Israeli artist to have a top ten hit in the US, Yael Naim has continued to break ground in North America since her initial push courtesy of Apple making use of “New Soul” for their Macbook Air commercial.

The French-Israeli singer has wowed audiences with her recorded as well as live performances, as she brings a level of freshness to the table that the North American public has been in search of. Much like Feist and Kimya Dawson, Naim’s voice has an air of innocence and happiness that warms the soul. Her honest lyrics, sung predominantly in Hebrew, are a testament to the search for happiness within us.

This brand of little voiced songbird music maybe fresh to the scene, but seems strong enough to stick around. Naim, matching Feist’s cute rhetoric and soft handle, rises slightly above, due to her mysterious international background. Artistic folk pop with a message, from a Calgary native, doesn’t have the same ring to it as an effort from a Paris born Israeli international artist, but I’m digressing…

This album is a masterpiece in its own rite and Naim may prove to be a staple in this ever growing genre. With some of the stagnant efforts being put forth by today’s artists...maybe we’re in need of some New Soul.

Yael Naim will take her place along side Feist as a like minded artist. A beautiful voice and plenty of creative possibility this album is freash fruit in a rotting bowl.
