Droning, eerie, melodic, and heavy, the debut from the L.A. quartet Black Math Horseman fits neatly into the cornucopia of so-called stoner-rock bands that cropped up during the 2000s. But WYLT's distinguishing factor might be Sera Timms's vocals, which soften the bluesy, bass-driven propulsion of punishing tracks like "Deerslayer" with a hippie-like ethereal quality that evokes Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval. It's an unpredictable album, despite an apparent debt to forebears like Kyuss and kinship with psych-rockers such as Black Mountain. But what's often so impressive about WYLT is its willingness to linger in even more ominous spaces.
