Title Note

This budget-priced 18-song collection features most of the highlights -- in terms of chart singles and notable album tracks -- from the music that Manfred Mann cut for Fontana Records between 1966 and 1969. Opening with the group's version of "The Mighty Quinn" and closing with its rendition of "Just Like a Woman," the CD is a handy compilation of the band's late-1960s period, when they abandoned their jazz and R&B origins in favor of more pop-oriented material and the occasional push toward soft psychedelia. The CD would at least be handy if it were only programmed in something resembling chronological order. Instead, the band's final hit, "Ragamuffin Man," is dead-center in the song lineup, and little else of what's here is any more sensibly programmed. Even more annoying are the notes, which follow the chronological order. The sound is decent, which is a plus, but this collection should still be taken with a grain of salt, as "the world of Manfred Mann" turned sideways and upside down. ~ Bruce Eder
