Tom Verlaine Artist Snapshot:

After the demise of the much-lauded band Television at the end of the 1970s, guitarist and songwriter Tom Verlaine wasted no time in launching a productive solo career, regularly releasing albums of challenging but tuneful songs marked by honest vocals and the distinctive gleam of his guitar playing. By the '90s, his music had taken a turn towards tangled and edgy instrumentals. Occasionally Verlaine reunites with Television, or tries his hand at production, but for the most part is content to play, write, and record at his own pace.

Title Note

Personnel: Tom Verlaine (vocals, guitar); Lene Lovich (vocals, saxophone);

Jimmy Ripp (guitar); Fred Smith, Joe Vasta (bass); Jay Dee Daugherty, Tommy Price, Allan Schwartzberg (drums).

Tom Verlaine's third solo album was the 1982 successor to the previous year's DREAMTIME. It is again a worthy companion to the albums that he released with his trailblazing band of the '70s, Television. From the angular guitar riffs of the opening "Present Arrived" to the lush romanticism of "Postcard From Waterloo" (still rife with dazzling Stratocaster riffs), this set shows all of his strengths as a writer, guitarist, and singer. The title song is a stunning tour-de-force that couples a battle-weariness with a sense of hope. At more than six minutes, it uses every second of its length to accomplish its slow and profound build. The album's closer, "Days on the Mountain," clocks in at nearly 10 minutes in length and finds guitars dancing around one another with grace and ease over a simple rhythmic backdrop.
