Along with LFO's debut, also on Warp, Nightmares on Wax's late-'91 release, A WORD OF SCIENCE, took the techno world by storm. Dissecting the sound of contemporary techno and its various regional variants (Chicago, Detroit, Berlin, U.K.), slowing the tempo, and highlighting the slightly sinister elements, the album succeeds in beating many at their own game, while also foreshadowing a turn away from the mindless happy hardcore of the time. The only N.O.W. full-length that featured the original duo of George Evelyn and Kevin Harper, it collects the group's pre-album club classics "Aftermath" and "Dextrous" as well as inventive new tracks like the relentless assault of "A Case of Funk" and the playful smooth jazz-rap of "Mega Donutz." Defying easy categorization and providing much-needed variety, A WORD OF SCIENCE proved innovative and influential. Most importantly, it stood the test of time in a music scene where stasis is considered the ultimate offense.
