Review

Down Beat (p.78) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Spacey, art-rock chord progressions and clipped funk jams abound on Garaj Mahal's third studio effort, a pleasantly strange combination of influence..."
JazzTimes (p.84) - "They get shuffly/rootsy with 'Uptown Tippitinas' before ending on a Next Generation Fusion Band note, with Haque's 'Jamie's Jam,' alternately spacey and fuzoid, with rapid lines that won't quit."

Title Note

Garaj Mahal: Fareed Haque (guitar, guitars); Eric Levy (keyboards); Kai Eckhardt (bass instrument, bass guitar); Alan Hertz (drums).

Personnel: Wendy Levy, Plant Family (vocals); Adam Theis (trombone); DJ Nick Aspect (turntables).

Audio Mixers: Gary Mielke; Alan Hertz.

In the early 1970s, fusion--of jazz with rock, funk, whatever--was a brave, adventurous concept; in the '00 decade, many jam bands picked up where some of the fusion artists left off. Garaj Mahal explore an area wherein aspects of rock, funk, soul-jazz, and smooth jazz overlap. The sparse "Corner Peace" features beautifully contemplative solos from Fareed Haque's flamenco-tinged acoustic guitar and Eric Levy's lyrical acoustic piano. "Uptown Tippitina's" smolders with joyful New Orleans ambience and includes a slow-burning, blues-charged electric guitar solo. WOOT is easygoing instrumental music with grace and style to spare.
