Review

Rolling Stone (p.76) - "[T]here is a bracing, open-air-worship quality in Whalen's long-breath chords and the ecstatic seizure of Johnson's heavily distorted guitar breaks."
Uncut (p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Everything here is duly served with a dedication to finding the ultimate locked groove that's admirable in its singlemindedness."
The Wire (p.35) - Included in The Wire's "50 Records of the Year 2007".
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.50) - "With songs drifting in and out of full-on blasts of static and swampy, harsh basslines to moments of almost Manchester indie calm..."

Title Note

With a bare-bones rhythmic pulse that recalls the Velvet Underground at their most primitive and the Stooges at their most primal, San Francisco's Wooden Shjips present a minimalist yet highly absorbing brand of psych rock on their self-titled Holy Mountain debut. Throughout, mountainous reverb-soaked vocals play freaky head games with the listener, while occasional Doors-like keyboard lines--seemingly there to give the songs a melodic anchor--creep up to add an extra dose of hallucinogenic Fillmore West vibery to the sonic punch bowl. However, it is the supremely fuzzed-out and subtly transcendent guitar playing of frontman Erik Johnson that truly pushes this album into the red.
