Title Note

Perhaps inspired by the "women in rock" hype of the '90s (but likely not), Sony Music Special Products' Women on Top of the Charts contains a weird sampling of female artists of all genres. What exactly do Carole King ("I Feel the Earth Move"), Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam ("Lost in Emotion"), Basia ("Cruising for Bruising"), Susanna Hoffs ("My Side of the Bed"), Bonnie Tyler ("Total Eclipse of the Heart"), Deniece Williams ("Let's Hear It for the Boy"), Scandal ("The Warrior"), Regina Belle ("Make it Like It Was"), Rosanne Cash ("Seven Year Ache") and Janis Joplin ("Me and Bobby McGee") have in common? They all recorded for a label Sony Music now owns, probably Columbia or Epic. Given that there are so many different styles on the disc, it's not surprising that the collection simply doesn't gel. That said, there are no bad songs here, so in a weird way, it offers good value for your money -- if you happen to like all the featured tunes, that is. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
