Product note

The digitally mastered double-disc set WOMAN'S TROUBLE BLUES brings together 40 numbers from legendary blues singer Bessie Smith, including "Mama's Got The Blues," "Nobody Know You When You're Down and Out," and "Need A Little Sugar In My Bowl."

Album Description

This is a perfectly acceptable double-disc compilation of the great Bessie Smith's work from her Okeh and Columbia sides. Given that it's on Snapper, it doesn't suffer from some of the terrible mastering that some other labels issued in the past. There are 40 cuts spread out here, including both parts of "Empty Bed Blues," back to back, which is a plus. It is both a fitting introduction -- with some decent liner notes to add context -- as well as a solid compilation for those unwilling to delve completely into the Sony Legacy collections. Sure, there is plenty more than a "little" here, but if you are at all drawn to the early blues, this will no doubt wet your appetite for more. ~ Thom Jurek
