Canadian quartet Wolf Parade unveiled its self-titled 2005 Sub Pop EP to considerable anticipation, largely due to the group's friendships with the Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse, two of the most celebrated bands of 2004. (The latter act's Isaac Brock produced two of the EP's four tracks.)

"Shine a Light" cruises along on fuzzed-out bass, spare drums, and a droning keyboard line, recalling the urgent indie-rock of the National, while "You Are a Runner and I Am My Father's Son" conjures up a quirky, carnival-like atmosphere, and the closing "Lousy Pictures" mixes aspects of both aforementioned songs to combustible effect. Wolf Parade's overall sound may be familiar to fans of edgy rock, yet listeners will be hard pressed to define it. This enigmatic quality serves the band well and hints at a promising future.
