WOLCUM YULE finds the acclaimed early music vocal group Anonymous 4 getting into the holiday spirit with an album of both well-known and unfamiliar Yuletide music from the British Isles. The program offers traditional carols and ballads from England, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland, incorporating Christian and pagan elements. In addition, modern works such as John Taverner's "The Lamb," Benjamin Britten's "A New Year Carol," and a newly commissioned piece by Peter Maxwell Davies, "A Calendar of Kings," are also featured. The four vocalists, joined by the extraordinary harpist Andrew Lawrence-King, weave a spellbinding sonic tapestry of bright colors and rich textures.
Old favorites including "I Saw Three Ships" and "The Holly and the Ivy," rarities such as the Welsh carol "Behold, Here Is the Best Morning," as well as contemporary works are offered in a variety of skillfully wrought settings and arrangements that make for a satisfyingly eclectic program. The members of the ensemble demonstrate that they're the paradigm of vocal excellence, collectively and individually, and Lawrence-King displays virtuosity on a variety of instruments, both as accompanist and soloist. All parties involved add luster to their reputations with this well-conceived and brilliantly executed effort.
