Review

Entertainment Weekly (p.83) - "[T]he instantly hummable 'It Takes Time' is indicative of their improved songwriting. The result is the work of an effectively new band -- and a much better one." -- Grade: B+
Uncut (p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[C]ameos from Emily Haines and other Broken Social Scenesters bolster this intriguing album's spirited feel."
Alternative Press (p.194) - "'Oh Shoplifter' is an infectious ray of sunshine that's all handclaps and foot stomps, and 'Destroyer' sounds like a lost '70s-pop-radio hit, complete with punchy horns and bubbling organ."
CMJ (p.4) - "WITHOUT FEATHERS is brimming with AM-radio warmth, while never sounding too stuck in a classic rock gear."

Title Note

A notable about-face from the Stills' debut, LOGIC WILL BREAK YOUR HEART, this 2006 outing finds the Montreal-bred/New York City-based ensemble downplaying its gloomy, '80s-influenced post-punk aesthetic in favor of a more buoyant classic-rock sound. This change reflects the group's between-albums personnel shift as well, which involved, among other things, the addition of keyboardist Liam O'Neil, whose presence is strongly felt in the prominent Hammond lines on the disc's fast-paced opener, "In the Beginning." While "Helicopters" revisits the Stills' more direct, streamlined approach, songs such as the shuffling "Oh Shoplifter" and the horn-laden "It Takes Time" reveal the work of a restless act that has boldly altered its course, making WITHOUT FEATHERS an admirably unpredictable album.
