Title Note

Personnel includes: Bix Beiderbecke (cornet); Don Williams (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Tommy Dorsey (trombone); Joe Venuti (violin); Eddie Lang (guitar); Jean Goldkette's Orchestra.

Recorded between 1924 & 1927.

It is difficult to reconcile the glowing accolades bestowed upon Jean Goldkette's Orchestra by musicians like Red Norvo, Artie Shaw, and Benny Goodman, given the group's slim recorded output. The A&R people at Victor were adamant about choosing less "hot" music for the group, and sales figures from the 1920s indicate that they knew what they were doing.

Known as a "musician's band," one that, in performance, did not pander with comedy, gimmicks, or vaudevillian "hokum," the Goldkette ensemble had some of the era's best musicians in Bix Beiderbecke, Frank Trumbauer, Joe Venuti, and Eddie Lang, who all make fine contributions here. While some of the tracks are marred by stiff vocals, Goldkette, originally from France and classically trained, employed the astute arranger Bill Challis, who livens up the proceedings considerably. Richard Sudhalter's liner notes, which are taken in part from his incomparable book, LOST CHORDS: WHITE MUSICIANS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO JAZZ, set the historical stage for encountering and appreciating this important ensemble.
