Title Note

On its 2006 self-titled debut, Witch offers up a weighty slab of classic, first-wave doom metal. Although the New England-based quartet's membership includes J. Mascis, the Dinosaur Jr. frontman sticks to drum duty on this fierce seven-song set, leaving the blistering leads to Asa Irons, who, along with vocalist Kyle Thomas, is also a part of the psych-folk ensemble Feathers. While Thomas's singing bears the influences of Marc Bolan and Robert Plant, Irons's six-string work takes more than a page from Tony Iommi's playbook, with crushingly ominous riffs alternating with wailing solos (see the lumbering "Soul of Fire" and the doom-laden "Rip Van Winkle"). Obvious inspirations aside, the tunes on WITCH pack enough punch to stand on their own merits, meaning devoted followers of unapologetically heavy rock have yet another band to worship.
