Though David S. Ware's deeply felt Buddhism shines through not only with this album title but several of his others, such as GREAT BLISS and TAO, his music has a thoroughly composed structural integrity that sets him apart from the wispy formlessness of most New Age music. His simply astonishing tenor saxophone work, featuring whirlwind shrieks of overblowing and multiphonics, shows the influence of the '60s free jazz movement (he served an apprenticeship under pianist Cecil Taylor) and his indebtedness to his two most obvious influences, Pharaoh Sanders and Eric Dolphy.

Like the earlier TAO, the six-track WISDOM OF UNCERTAINTY is a suite of sorts, its individual lengthy pieces containing and expanding upon recurrent themes and motifs. It's as warm and improvisationally expansive as TAO, though titles like "Acclimation," "Antidromic," and "Sunbows Rainsets Blue" also intimate the mathematical precision of Ware's carefully planned compositions, fulfilling the dichotomy of the title.
