Originally released around the same time as Sony's March '97 edition of Playstation, WIPEOUT XL is a collection of heart-racing, adrenaline-pumping cuts unconditionally guaranteed to rock your digitally generated world. And just because it's from '97 doesn't mean it's only fit for Donkey Kong or the like--several of the cuts included here are so hard they'll drag you outside into the alley and steal your lunch money.

The Future Sound Of London weigh in with the vintage "We Have Explosive," a roaring, crackling slice of '90s dance that's packed with the kind of classic electro-bells and whistles beloved of '90s UK techno kids, while the Chemical Brothers are heard here in their prime with the grinding "Loops of Fury." The distinctive skittering digital pots-and-pan beats and loping dinosaur bass of Photek's "The Third Sequence" are only a prelude to the raging, headlong rush of Prodigy's legendary "Firestarter," after which the midtempo lope of Daft Punk's "Musique" comes just in time to avoid sensory overload. But it's soon back into the electronic vortex with Source Direct's complex, accelerated "2097," while Leftfield's insistent, mesmerizing "Afro Ride" guarantees you'll put WIPEOUT XL on repeat play.
