Review

"Pratchett is gifted in his ability to create distinct, varied characters that span a remarkable range of sizes, personalities, and even species..."

"Pratchett once again delivers a sidesplittingly funny adventure that overlays a deeply thoughtful inquiry into the nature of narrative and identity..."

First line

When the storm came, it hit the hills like a hammer.

Publisher's note

When witch-in-training Tiffany Aching accidentally interrupts the Dance of the Seasons and awakens the interest of the elemental spirit of Winter, she requires the help of the six-inch-high, sword-wielding, sheep-stealing Wee Free Men to put the seasons aright.

Annotation

Teenage witch Tiffany Aching's inveterate curiosity wins her an unusual suitor and a whole heap of trouble in her third adventure, part of Terry Pratchett's long-running fantasy series set on the Discworld. As the weather gets colder, the elemental spirits, the Wintersmith and the Summer Lady, dance to celebrate the changing of the seasons. When Tiffany inadvertently inserts herself into that dance, the Wintersmith becomes determined to make her his bride. His attempts at romance seem harmless at first (shaping all snowflakes to resemble her, crafting roses out of ice, spelling her name in frost, and so on), but soon become chillingly dangerous both for Tiffany and all of the Discworld.
