Review

"Ted Kooser is one of the best poets of his generation. Period. I don't know why this news hasn't been more widely trumpeted. Perhaps it is because he has usually written brief, lucid poems while prominent critics fawn over poets who sprawl among their allusions. Perhaps it is the regional label, "Nebraska poet"--only damaging when we forget that the best writers have nearly always been regional at some level."

First line

In the autumn of 1998, during my recovery from surgery and radiation for cancer, I began taking a two-mile walk each morning.

Annotation

When US Poet Laureate Ted Kooser was diagnosed with cancer, he turned to poetry, writing one short poem each day and mailing it to a friend, the writer Jim Harrison. The result--the 100 poems collected here--won the Nebraska Book Award in 2001. Each poem begins with the date and a brief weather report: "November 9. Rainy and cold" or "January 31. Light mist on a sharp wind." The poems reflect the walks Kooser took daily throughout the cold Nebraska winter, as he pondered his relationships to friends and family and to nature. The last one ("March 20. The vernal equinox") ends with the line: This morning the sun stood/right at the end of the road/and waited for me."
