Phosphorescent Artist Snapshot:

Phosphorescent's Mathew Houck springs from the same Athens, GA scene that birthed Elephant 6 acts like the Neutral Milk Hotel and Of Montreal, but the stolid, dust-blown Americana of albums like PRIDE and A HUNDRED TIMES OR MORE couldn't be further removed from the psychedelic pop with which those acts are associated. Houck assumed the Phosphorescent moniker after releasing a single album, 2000's HIPOLIT, as Filup Shack. The first proper Phosphorescent album, A HUNDRED TIMES OR MORE, was ecstatically received by the English music press, and subsequent efforts like 2005's AW COME AW WRY have proven equally successful. In early 2009, Houck released TO WILLIE, an album of Willie Nelson covers.

Review

Mojo (Publisher) (p.107) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Houck imbues the material with fresh grace and majesty....This has more than enough beauty and character to stand on its own."
Paste (magazine) (p.55) - "Houck's voice knows exactly when to crack, and when the material's as great as this, that's the only embellishment you need."
Clash (magazine) (p.102) - "The mood is familiar and friendly, channeling Nelson's rootsy country....A perfectly judged homage performed with the authority of a true talent."

Title Note

Recording information: Brooklyn, NY (2008).

In 1975, Willie Nelson released a tribute to one of the original country outlaws, Lefty Frizzell, called TO LEFTY FROM WILLIE. Phosphorescent's TO WILLIE is an alt-country continuation of the same concept. Its 11 songs are all moderately obscure Willie Nelson tunes (no "Red Headed Stranger" or "On the Road Again") delivered in a mournful indie country style that reveals Nelson's oft-underestimated connection to this particular sub-genre. Highlights include "I Gotta Get Drunk" and "Reasons To Quit."
