Review

Rolling Stone (8/5/99, p.70) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...a tone of nothing to prove....from not having a care....what's inside WILDCAT...is more like the Interstate Highway System, not a perfect gesture but a whole life lived."
CMJ (4/26/99, p.37) - "This is the first new album in more than 30 years from the creator of the Louisiana swamp Rock sound that influenced John Fogerty, Brian Setzer and Eric Clapton. [Icludes] several new songs and fresh recordings..."
Dirty Linen (10-11/99, p.92) - "Hawkins announces his return to recording with a muffed beginning, but then he and his band kick down the door, turning loose the feral title cut....the guy who wrote 'Suzie Q' romps through the swamp one more time..."

The world at large may know Louisiana-born swamp-rockabilly great Dale Hawkins as the man who wrote "Suzy Q," which was made famous years later by Creedence Clearwater Revival. What most people may not know is that Hawkins' '50s and '60s work was endlessly inventive and eclectic, and that he deserves a place in the pantheon of early rockers like Charlie Rich, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. Incredibly, WILDCAT TAMER is Hawkins' first album in 30 years, but it finds his singing and writing prowess undiminished.

Throughout, Hawkins presents raw, unvarnished rockabilly, occasionally leaning into blues, R&B and country territory (the building blocks of rock & roll after all). R.L. Burnside's right-hand man Kenny Brown contributes guitar work and adds some additional heat to the fire. Along the way, there are spirited takes on tunes by Chuck Berry and Leadbelly, and of course, a new version of the classic "Suzy Q."
