UMD the Universal Media Disc is an optical disc medium developed by Sony for use on the PSP (PlayStation Portable). It can hold up to 1.8 gigabytes of data and it is the first optical disc format to be used for a handheld video game system. The format, 60mm wide and 4 mm high, is designed to store games, videos (movies) and music for playback on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) device.
Not only offering storage for official PSP games, UMD offers another format with which to distribute movies. Movies on this format can benefit from the PSP's 480x272 pixel resolution at a 16:9 ratio.
