Cassette also known as the Compact Cassette or Tape is a magnetic tape audio playback and recording format. Covered in a plastic casing, it functions by passing a magnetically coated plastic tape between two miniature spools. The most popular varieties of cassettes are the C46 which allow for 23 minutes per side and the C60 which plays up to 30 minutes of audio content per side.
For reel-to-reel audio tape recording, the cassette was very convenient, but because of its size limitations, it originally compared poorly in quality to the vinyl LP. The Cassette was originally intended for use in dictation machines but quickly became a popular medium for distributing prerecorded music.
Today, cassettes are used for a variety of purposes such as journalism, oral history, meetings and interviews and so on.
