Review

"[A] winning debut...introduces gifted detective Darko Dawson...a wonderful creation, a man...rich with contradictions....[R]eaders will be eager for the next installment in what one hopes will be a long series."

Publisher's note

For fans of Alexander McCall Smith, a debut mystery set in West Africa that introduces a marvelous detective and a culturally rich community
Detective Inspector Darko Dawson, a good family man and a remarkably intuitive sleuth, is sent to the village of Ketanu--the site of his mother's disappearance many years ago--to solve the murder of an accomplished young AIDS worker.
While battling his own anger issues and concerns for his ailing son, Darko explores the motivations and secrets of the residents of Ketanu. It soon becomes clear that in addition to solving a recent murder, he is about to unravel the shocking truth about his mother's disappearance.
Kwei Quartey's sparkling debut novel introduces readers to a rich cast of characters, including the Trokosi--young women called Wives of the Gods--who, in order to bring good fortune to their families, are sent to live with fetish priests. Set in Ghana, with the action moving back and forth between the capital city of Accra and a small village in the Volta Region, "Wife of the Gods" brings the culture and beauty of its setting brilliantly to life.

Investigating the murder of an AIDS worker in an African community from which his mother went missing years earlier, Detective Inspector Darko Dawson collects details about the killing and realizes that he is close to solving the truth about his mother's disappearance. A first novel.

Annotation

In Kwei Quartey's debut novel, likely to be the first in a series, Inspector Darko Dawson from the capital city of Accra in Ghana is assigned to investigate the murder of a female medical student in Ketanu, a small village. The people of Ketanu, who have already lined up a patsy to take the fall for the crime, are none too happy to have a big city detective scrutinizing their secrets, which include an illicit practice wherein young girls are enslaved to priests as "trokosi," or wives of the gods. Ketanu also happens to be the place where Inspector Dawson's mother disappeared years ago, and he soon finds that these two mysteries are not entirely disconnected. The setting and genre will obviously elicit comparisons to Alexander McCall Smith's popular series of African mysteries, but Quartey's characters, particularly the charismatic dope-smoking detective, are darker and more complex.
