Although Nathaniel Mayer only managed one national Top 40 hit ("Village of Love" in the spring of 1962), the young R&B singer maintained a devoted following in his hometown of Detroit through the 1960s, particularly for his later, more aggressive and funk-oriented singles. After decades in retirement, Mayer began playing live in 2002, often backed by young Detroit-area musicians, including members of the Dirtbombs, the Sights, and Outrageous Cherry. His 2004 album I JUST WANT TO BE HELD was followed by 2007's WHY DON'T YOU GIVE IT TO ME?, which also featured the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach.

Obscure to all but the most avid soul music fans, Detroit native Nathaniel Mayer released his second comeback album in 2007. With the assistance of a young and hungry backing band that features members of Outrageous Cherry, the Dirtbombs, and the Black Keys, Mayer cooks with a bit more grease in the pan on WHY DON'T YOU GIVE IT TO ME than on his 2004 Fat Possum release, I JUST WANT TO BE HELD. Black Keys' guitarist Dan Auerbach lays down gritty, reverb-drenched riffs over a simple pulsing groove, letting Mayer unleash his haunting Howlin' Wolfe-style rasp. This album stands proudly alongside--and maybe slightly to the left of, given the presence of a slightly acid-tinged vibe--the finest classic soul comeback albums of the early 2000s.
