Review

"If you had to come up with one word to describe Thomas Glave's debut story collection, WHOSE SONG?, you might look to the vernacular of one of his talkative, sharp-tongued African American characters: fierce."

"The cost of closeted sexuality is the subject of many of these stories. In another writer, this emphasis might seem repetitious or even tendentious; homosexuality, though, especially closeted homosexuality, is the ground situation of Glaves's fictional universe and, as such, it operates less as a dark secret than as a metaphor....Glave is a gifted stylist. In nearly every story, though, he lapses for at least a while into what might be called Faulkner-speak...[but] there are worse problems for a writer to have....Glave is blessed with ambition, his own voice and an impressive willingness to dissect how individuals actually think and behave."

"Thomas Glave's voice [is] steeped...in the black insouciance and back-street opalescence of a mind born in the Bronx of the 1970s and schooled in the literary and aesthetic culture of Jamaica and the wider Caribbean that he seems to regard as his spiritual home.Whether writing about a simple, brutal rape or the abysmal moral history of an entire island nation, Glave seeks out the ironic, the revelatory, and the grotesque....Glave...probes the soft underbelly of love's body, ennobles it, and gives it light...."

Annotation

These violent stories, which range from the graphic physical violence of armed gangs on a Caribbean Island, to the emotional violence suffered by the husband of an alcoholic, involve African-American characters in intense situations. Stylistically, the writing is often lush, including long sentences and vivid, descriptive passages.
