Everlast Artist Snapshot:

Everlast first broke onto the music scene in the early-'90s as part of the Irish-American frat-boy rappers of House Of Pain (who scored a monster hit with "Jump Around"). He launched a solo career after the outfit split in the middle of the decade. Doing a complete stylistic about-face, Everlast reinvented himself as a rock-rap everyman, merging the lyrical folk-rock tales of Bob Dylan and Neil Young with trip-hop beats and finding success on his own, scoring one of the biggest modern rock hits of the 1990s with "What It's Like."

Review

Q (4/99, pp.96-97) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...much here turns out to be of a more sophisticated hue than the expected off-the-peg bellicose hip-hop. Soulful blues...jazzy balladeering...and old school funk...all make welcome appearances..."
The Source (11/98, p.208) - "...the toughest white boy to pick up a microphone has returned....WHITEY FORD SINGS THE BLUES is a collection of rap meets rock tunes that are sure to appeal only to one-minded rap fans..."
Mojo (Publisher) (03/99) - "...A beautifully crafted, ocassionally affecting album..."

"What It's Like" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

The former frontman for House of Pain sheds the hip-hop-only mode and steps out into the world of rock with this release. Tapping into the social structure of rock, Everlast keeps his rap credibility but blesses the skateboard kids with r&r vibes, making a brilliant texture of hip-hop beats and six-string melodies. "What It's Like," the album's first single, enjoyed a much-deserved rise towards the top of the charts.

Produced by John Gamble and the SD50, WHITEY FORD contains tracks that offer the lyrical depth and social relevance Everlast has always been known for. Tracks like "Ends," "Praise the Lord" and "Death Comes Callin'" show why Everlast remained on the scene for more than a decade. Guest appearances from Sadat X of Brand Nubian, Bronx Style Bob and Casual, along with interludes from Guru, Prince Paul, and Sen Dog from Cypress Hill keep plenty of flavor flowin' throughout the album.
