Review

Pitchfork (Website) - "Assemble Head have frequently found themselves on the edge of mellow, and this new album -- while still fairly powerful with the volume up -- seems to be reining in their more chaotic tendencies, with fewer blown-out serrated edges and more clean, open space."

Title Note

Personnel: Charlie Saufley (vocals, guitars, tamboura, bass instrument, percussion); Camilla Saufley (vocals, flute, keyboards, bass instrument); Evan Reese, Christina Mansfield, Brett Constantino (vocals); Jefferson Marshall (guitar, bass instrument, percussion); Tim Green (E-bow, vibraphone); Cindi Kazarian (viola); Anderson Lanbridge (Moog synthesizer, Theremin); Michael Landas (drums).

Audio Mixer: Tim Green .

With layered guitar lines and aural effects that hang like dispersed dandelion seeds in a summer breeze, WHEN SWEET SLEEP RETURNED finds San Francisco's Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound perfecting their trippy symphonics across eight sweeping tracks. For this, their third full-length, the former trio expanded to a quintet and continued to leave fans wondering if they are the planet's biggest acid indulgers or if they just have extensive record collections by those that were. No matter, as tracks like "The Slumbering Ones" and "Two Birds" continually and effortlessly build climaxes to give listeners a constant thrumming peak. Recording with Tim Green--a producer cornering their market on the best instrumentally driven neo-psych of his day from Comets on Fire to Six Organs of Admittance--the band matches lengthier jamming passages with enough catchy shreds of melody to entertain the more clear-eyed.
