Review

Living Blues (p.59) - "Johnson impresses as both singer and guitarist, and there's plenty of good material....[An] astonishingly fine compilation of his early recordings..."

Title Note

Personnel: Roy Lee Johnson (vocals, guitar); Keith Samuels (acoustic & electric guitars, bass, digital drums); Larry Hall (acoustic & electric guitars); Paul Linden (harmonica); James Meadows (srtings, horns, piano).

Though veteran R&B singer Roy Lee Johnson will always be best remembered for writing "Mr. Moonlight," a song covered by the Beatles, astute fans of the genre long treasured his recordings as prime examples of pure Southern soul. WHEN A GUITAR PLAYS THE BLUES placed an emphasis on Johnson's powerful voice and his mellow-toned, crying lead guitar, and couches them in a somewhat modern, soul-blues production style. From the swampy, shuffling title track to the booty-shaking funk workout "Real Thang," Johnson revealed he was still a force to be reckoned with more than four decades into his career.
