The Noisettes Artist Snapshot:

London indie trio the Noisettes formed after meeting in the singularly unlikely surroundings of an audition for a TV game show. After the release of a well-received EP, THE THREE MOODS OF THE NOISETTES, and some spectacular gigs, they were snapped up by Universal, who revived the defunct imprint Vertigo for the band. Singles "Don't Give Up" and "Sister Rosetta" were supported by extensive touring--including opening slots with Babyshambles and Bloc Party--before the release of their debut full-length, WHAT'S THE TIME MR. WOLF, in 2007. Singer Shingai also contributed vocals to the Guillemots single "Made Up Love Song #43".

Review

Rolling Stone (p.63) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Shingai Shoniwa is a piece of work for sure, jumping from soulful growls to evil shrieks like a cross between Karen O and Koko Taylor."
Spin (p.88) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Shingai Shoniwa is arresting on the band's remarkably assured debut when she lets it rip..."
Entertainment Weekly (p.63) - "[Their] dance-rock comes adorned with glittery choruses and jaunty rhythms." -- Grade: B
Q (p.115) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, this may be art rock, but it's art rock you can hum."
Uncut (p.91) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "On record, with the whole band skipping from stoner metal to jazz-soul, they're often inspired."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "The Noisettes are a refreshingly unique proposition....With an utterly original sound..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[C]ompelling. The most obvious source of originality is Shingai Soniwa's extraordinary voice, which flits from roof-shaking lung power to quivering psychosis to childlike squeals, via husky seduction and tender romance."

Title Note

Composer: The Noisettes.

On their 2007 full-length debut, WHAT'S THE TIME, MR. WOLF? the Noisettes successfully establish themselves as U.K. counterparts to New York City's Yeah Yeah Yeahs. While the London-based trio shares a number of similarities with Karen O and company--most notably, a fierce frontwoman and a spare, edgy post-punk-influenced musical approach--the group, led by vocalist/bassist Shingai Shoniwa, clearly has its own distinctive sound. With Shoniwa impressively meshing the singing styles of Martina Topley-Bird (Tricky) and PJ Harvey, the band's dynamic aesthetic is best revealed on the spiky, wire-tight "IWE" and the soulful, bluesy "Sister Rosetta (Capture the Spirit)," a raucous tribute to gospel great Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
