Annotation

Marvin Gaye's remarkable state-of-the-nation critique of America's social, political, and moral outlook of the late 1960s and early '70s was a quantum artistic leap for both the musician and his record label, Tamla Motown. As the title of British music writer Ben Edmonds's story of the album's creation--WHAT'S GOING ON: MARVIN GAYE AND THE LAST DAYS OF THE MOTOWN SOUND--implies, the freewheeling, linear approach of Gaye's masterpiece also heralded a business and musical sea-change in the Motown music factory. At first just one of a stable of stars groomed for success by the highly professional hit machine, Gaye first asserted his individuality in his dark, brooding 1968 version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." However, it wasn't until 1971, after the death of his friend and singing partner Tammi Terrell, that he emerged from a self-imposed seclusion with the collection of socially and politically aware songs that would form WHAT'S GOING ON, much to the hit song-oriented Barry Gordy's consternation (Gordy initially refused to release the record, prompting Gaye to threaten to abandon music for a football career; Gaye cheekily included a couple of Detroit Lions players' voices on the album's title track). Accompanied by in-depth interviews with many of Gaye's fellow artists, Edmonds's authoritative story of the business and personal struggles between artist and label is an absorbing account of a tumultuous period in contemporary music history.
