Experimental, progressive, avant-garde--or what you will. The North Carolina guitar, bass, and drums trio Ahleuchatistas aim to blow away tidy preconceptions about what constitutes jazz and rock, as well as about what a musician's role in society should be. With their second album, WHAT YOU WILL, they recall politically aware 1960s and '70s U.K. artists like Soft Machine and Derek Bailey, with track titles like "Remember Rumsfeld At Abu Ghraib" and "Ho Chi Minh Is Gonna Win!" as well as conjuring the glory days of prog pioneers like Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. But though the Ahleuchatistas' music may superficially appear difficult, it never sinks to self-indulgence; tracks like "Before the Law" and "Sometimes There's a Buggy" maintain both structure and coherence, and frequently possess an ethereal beauty.
