Anne Murray achieved superstardom in the '70s with hits like "Snowbird," "Danny's Song," and "You Needed Me." She then crossed over in the '80s with a string of country hits. In the '90s, due to changing musical tastes, Anne's style of country became somewhat passT, and she branched out to the vocals genre. WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD is a great collection of Christmas favorites, along with some inspiring pop hits.
"Lord I Hope This Day Is Good" has Anne singing with much conviction, and features an inspiring string arrangement and clarinet solo. Anne's version of the Beatles' "Let it Be" is soft and touching. On "Amazing Grace," her voice soars, and seems to be just as powerful as it was in the '70s. "The Old Rugged Cross" features some pleasant piano parts, while she makes "I Can See Clearly Now" her own. Her cover of "You've Got a Friend" differs from the original in its heavy use of violins. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is done soulfully, with female background singers adding a nice touch. "Jacob's Ladder" is an enlightening gospel number. Kudos to an artist who continues to branch out and evolve.
