Recorded at Javelina Studios, Nashville, Tennessee.

Like a breath of fresh air, Mark Chesnutt's WHAT A WAY TO LIVE swings triumphantly through the current glut of sound-alike country records. That's swinging in the true Texas musical sense.

Low-key and understated, with warm fiddles, Hawaiian-sounding steel, and delicate acoustic guitar, WHAT A WAY TO LIVE is goodtime country, down to the playful hand claps of the cowboy sing-along "Live A Little." Recalling the pop leanings of country's golden era, the songs could have been recorded by anyone from Bing Crosby and Gene Autry to Patsy Cline, but on WHAT A WAY TO LIVE it is pure Chesnutt.

The down home sentiment and the sentimental down home-isms of the album are Chesnutt trademarks. There's the plaintive "She Dreams" ("...she dreams, he'll come home from work and carry her away"), the humorous "Goin' Through The Big D" ("...and I don't mean Dallas, I got the jeep and she got the palace"), and the reflective "Down In Tennessee" with its crying pedal steel and teardrop drum beat. The topping on this delightful country confection is a duet, "Rainy Day Women," with his idol, Waylon Jennings.

In all, a refreshing, light-spirited album with a distinctive, bright sound.
