Title Note

WHAT NOW, WHAT NEXT? consists of recordings Bill Nelson has released under his own Cocteau Records imprint along with a handful of previously unreleased tracks.

The two-disc set WHAT NOW, WHAT NEXT? collects the cream of Bill Nelson's pop records from the early-'80s, adding a few unreleased tracks from the same era for good measure. Nelson's musical world is a hermetic one--out of 31 tracks, the only outside musician plays a negligible sax part on only one song--but these songs are much more musically interesting than much of his later output, and some seem to even recognize the greater musical universe.

The excellent single "Do You Dream in Colour," for example, is herky-jerky synth-bounce that sounds like Soft Cell covering T. Rex. Of the new songs, "First Boy on the Moon" and "Bride of the Atom" do the best job of living up to their inspired titles. This is a handy introduction to Bill Nelson's best work.
